We're Here For When You Need Us...

Emergency Dentistry

Patients in need of emergency level care must try to see a clinician within the hour, whether that be at the dentist, an emergency care facility, or the emergency room at a hospital.

These situations can be brought on by trauma such as sporting injuries or accidents, but some emergencies can occur after dental surgery, such as tooth extractions.

If you’re experiencing any of the following, we can help your return to normality:

  • Severe or extreme pain that has a debilitating effect
  • Bleeding that isn’t stopping, such as from post-extraction
  • Significant facial or gum swelling which is getting worse
  • Lodged foreign body in the gum or mouth area
  • Swiftly worsening infections
  • Inability to move your jaw

If you’ve had a mishap or accident and you’re in a lot of dental pain, you may require emergency dental treatment.

At Croxteth Dental Centre we have the facilities to provide appropriate care for problems such as a knocked-out tooth, infections, pain, swelling or bleeding after tooth removal.

Smart Dental Care practices have expert teams and state-of-the-art surgeries equipped with the latest technology. This allows fast and accurate diagnosis so you can get the treatment you need. We’ll alleviate pain, swelling or infection and get you back to normal. You’ll also receive the guidance you need to make your recovery as speedy as possible.

If you find yourself in severe pain or discomfort and feel that you require an emergency dental appointment, contact your local Smart Dental Care practice immediately on {emergency number} to get emergency care and aftercare for you and your family when you need it most.

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency right now, here is some advice for some common dental emergencies to hopefully tide you over until you see us.

When you contact us with an emergency, our helpful receptionists will be able to provide further advice over the phone too.

Immediate Pain Management

Pain management is crucial – if you’re experiencing any pain, take painkillers such as paracetamol. Ibuprofen can help with pain as well as inflammation if you have any swelling. Please be careful not to exceed the dosage on the packet.

A cold compress to the cheek can also provide some relief, as can rinsing your mouth in salty water. Avoid hot and cold food and drinks and avoid lowering your head or laying down, as the rush of blood can make pain feel worse.

A gel called Orajel can be purchased in pharmacies and provides an immediate numbing effect which may be enough to provide relief until you can reach your dentist.

If you’ve knocked out an adult tooth

If you’ve lost an adult tooth, do not touch the root – hold it by the part which would normally be visible. If it’s dirty, lick the tooth clean or rinse it in cold running water for no more than 10 seconds.

Try to re-insert the adult tooth – if this proves too difficult, place it in milk, saliva or the inside of your cheek until you can see a dentist and slow down bleeding by biting down on a clean cloth to hold it in place. If you succeed, bite down carefully on a clean cloth to keep it in place and get to the dentist as soon as possible. Do not try to re-insert a lost baby tooth – this can damage adult teeth underneath.
